    So..

if you were going to go to an anime event or convention, what sort of things would you want to see at it? and how much would you be willing to pay for it?

hrm, well cheap anime for one :)
anime-gear, t-shirts, hoodies, misc. cool stuff.
as for how much I'd be willing to pay.. I don't know really, not too much :) for me the real cost comes with accom. and travel.. heading up to belfast for a few nights is gona cost €100 or more probably

anime-showings would be cool too, maybe some lesser known series, movies, maybe even some live action jap films (BR, RING...etc etc)

I'd like to imported anime DVDs and manga for sale, loads of merchandise and ****, a cos-play competition(purely so I could laugh at the people though), rare anime screenings, special guests.
I'd be willing to pay around 20 yo for it probably, if it was good, maybe more.

Is there really a market for anime conventions in Ireland?
This forum is about as busy as a herpes infested hooker in Coachford, so that kinda suggests a lack of interest.

Personnally I wouldn't bother my arse going to one unless it was in Munster and had some damn good stuff going on, ie. Gundam stuff.

There may very not be enough people, but frankly this forum certainly doesn't indicate that - it's pretty obscure, even among anime fans who are very active on the internet.

well, there's some interesting suggestions so far.. although i think that unfortunately most of them will be difficult/impossible to do.

certainly dealers are a problem - i've talked to a few people, and most of them aren't really willing to go outside of England. is anyone aware of any ireland-based anime/manga suppliers, outside of Forbidden Planet?

cosplay i can also see as being.. difficult. because i doubt that many people would actually go to all that trouble (myself included) - although if everyone that's wanted it actually goes for it, it could happen :)

I think the state of play at the minute is that any anime stuff will either have to be tacked onto an existing con, or that any event will have to be pretty small, at least to begin with. getting more people to attend anime events at 'mainstream' cons will certainly help the case for doing a dedicated event.

There's that shop in Cork, "Other Realms" or something.
They have a good selection of overpriced anime, manga and various other things. Not as big as Forbidden Planet but it seems to get better every time I'm in there.

On a related note, wasn't there a con within the last couple of years that had some kind of sponsorship from manga entertainment? anyone involved/know any details?

    Hi, new here.

Would anime dealers and fans be willing to get together at one of the RPG conventions, such as Gaelcon? If there's overlap between the communities, and I know I fall into both camps, it could be a good way to piggyback an anime convention onto an existing convention.

Otherwise just one big anime screening like Eirtaku already does in Dublin. "If you come to no other screening this year, come to this one."

Well i know Mecon in Belfast is trying to encourage an anime feeling to their Sci-fi Convention.

and we out at Dominicon have always being open to trying new ideas, we added a Sci-fi section to our Games convention and i know we are planning some anime for next year(At least one room all weekend. a wide range of stuff.)

    anim convention

well, what i was going to propose has already been said.

i mean, i don't really see lots of people interested in mangas here. i'm quite surprised as in france so many teenagers and older are interested (i used to leave in a small country town, less than 6000 people and even the garda were looking for mangas and animes !) and here it seems inexisting. [out of subject : i'll go in holidays in france in a couple of week, so if any dubliner is looking for cheap anims (the box of love hina costs around 50€) send me a pm with a name of anim, i'll look if i can find it with english subtitles and / or track and at what price... /out of subject]

by the way, it might be a good idea not only organizing a manga convention, but something bigger where manga fans could share there passion to newcomers who could come to see something else.

this something else could be comics (i saw more shops with comics and with these movies tendancies, it might attract quite a few people) or asia theme...

what i'd like to see in such a convention would be loads of different mangas (well, i'm a newbie in mangas, i just know the more famous and a few others) with different styles. but also loats of animes and movies... the best would be seeing things unknown (puni puni poemi is one of my favorites, but it's not that famous i guess)

and obvioulsy, a possibility of buying rare stuffs could be nice

and why not (but that might be hard or more !) some artists showing their art with some new drawings ? (this would be a dream to meet the creator of lum or love hina, i don't count on it, but i know lots of french who would come to here (cheaper than japan ;) to meet 'em

thanx to the person who posted rearding gaelcon, i was looking for such a convention ! looking forward to go there !

It might interest some of you to know that Fred Gallagher (aka Piro of megatokyo.com , will be lecturering at Dublin University on either the 3rd or 4th of November.

He was supposed to give the lecture last year because of his busy schedule, but he's going to ayacon, so he'll be nearby, and hopefully, he'll attend.

Who's thinking of going to this? It's a lecture on "'Publishing your Creative Works to the Web" ..

I doubt Piro will be going to DCU, if that's where you meant Kairo?

In any case he will definitely give a talk in Trinity College Dublin, around those dates I assume.

    I'll post more details soon...
