Yea, in high school, isn't it mandatory to take atleast two years or foreign languages. What did/are you take? I'm taking Latin. I wish I could take Japanese but my school is too cheap to have japanese.

In sweden the schools offer you German, Spanish or French. I took 5 years of german, kinda spoiled 5 years of my life :p

But anyhow, I am learning Chinese (I am chinese), Japanese and Italian.

Languages that I know fluently: Chinese (Mandarin), German, English, Swedish, some Norwegen, some Danish.

I know English, French and Turkish (I'm half Turkish.) I feel really inferior compared to the rest of my family, though. Especially my eldest brother, who knows NINE languages (English, Spanish, French, Turkish, Cantonese, Mandarin, Japanese, Greek and Latin) of varying ability. He's seriously thinking about applying to the UN as a translator. :)

I have a friend called David clarke, hes about 38. apparently hes in the top 1% of european Mensa, but still considers himself the dumbest of 3 brothers.

His eldest brother works for the UN as a translator. apparently he knows 23 langauges fluently, and in a crisis situation with a country, the UN send him in, and he is able to learn the langauge to profiency level in 2 weeks.

Ouch is all i can say. Really ouch.
Makes me feel really dumb :p

You people are making me feel so dumb, lol! All I know is Spanish, but I want to take Latin.

I found an easy way to learn Japanese. I've watched one or two animes so much in Japanese, that I've memerized the subtitles and I know what they're saying, lol. don't ask. I know, I need a life...

I at times wish that I was born into a family other than one that only speaks English. But I can't really do a whole lot about that. As a result, English is the only language I have ever really been exposed to.
Being Canadian, I was forced to study French from grades one to nine. I was actually able to speak a bit back then, unlike all my classmates, and I can still get by with reading the language. All I really learned from studying French for nine years is that I hate the language, and that Ontario kicks the crap out of Québec. Oh, and that I love cursing in French; it's like wiping your *** with a piece of silk.
When I started grade ten, my school offered its first-ever Spanish class, so I signed up, and have been studying la lingua mas bella since then. I took the OAC (grade 13) course in grade twelve, which I kind of regret, but now I'm one of three or four first-year students in my second-year Spanish class.
One of my good friends back home is Russian, and he and his mother speak Russian to each other all the time because they don't want to lose the language, which I think is admirable. They at one point asked me if I thought it was rude when they did it around me because I had no idea what they were talking about, and I ended up going into a very patriotic speech about Canada being multicultural and stuff like that.
Also, the town of Strathroy, from which I hail, is made up of a very high percentage of Portuguese people and their families. So, Portuguese abounds (although this language I will not learn).

We don't exactly get a choice as to which languages to take -- English is our second language, too, so at any rate we'd be speaking about our first language, Spanish.

    That made no sense whatsoever. x_o ^^;

Point is, I've been taking Spanish since the second grade, English since... well, we are taught in English, so it shouldn't matter.

Again! No sense! *near passing out*

I'm taking English and Spanish for the third and final year of high school! (Fourth year if you're in the States!)

    So that's it! *passes out*

Could I just ask why I would be able to translate? Let me note here that I am nowhere near fluent in language, haven't studied it in five years, and only use it when I'm at museums and someone's standing in front of the English display and I have to read the French.

Hey, my point is not whether or not I can.
Besides, je n'aime pas de poisson is a very simple phrase.
    Je - simple pronoun
n' ... pas (ne ... pas) - just makes verb negative
aime - conjugated with je, making "I like", but in this case negative, so "I do not like"
    poisson - fish

Well, I guess that's a lesson in French from someone you now know can't speak it.

I took four years of French and don't remember half of it. :p It was enjoyable, but my school only had French and Spanish... really limited options. I would have liked something different.

I am currently taking Latin in college, and I really love it. Carpe diem!

Hey, if you have the option of Spanish, you have all the options you need.
