The console that saved the American gaming industry: the NES.

    A poll would be nice.

The Genesis has had so many of my favorite games, how can I not vote for it?

Langrisser Hikari II, Shining Force, Vay (Sega CD), Phantasy Star, all of them, Sega classics. :)

Not to mention Sonic the Hedgehog of course. ;)

NES. Saved the gaming industry, had a very long life, extremely reliable.

edit: Rags please tell me you're joking even adding a Sega CD game there

Second edit: Yeah Rai I'm sure you have extensive experience with the ZX Spectrum 81.

The Sega CD had a couple of good games. Not as many as other systems, and a lot of crap, but there were a few gems. Sonic CD and Vay were the only games on there I really liked, but Road Rash was ok too. Apart from that, not much. :/

In any case, I also loved the SNES. Although, even though the SNES had more games that I enjoyed, the Genesis had games that I enjoyed more, so actually it's kinda a tie.

IMHO having a "few gems" and a bucketload of crap does not make a console the greatest ever.

And what about having the best favourites? And pretty near the most, too.

    Either way it's still either the Genesis or the SNES for me. I grew up on them... ;_;

The Sega Master System, wich was far superior to the NES.

That said system dominated the market in Australia and New Zealand in the days on 8bit gaming, it is still my console of choice.

Too bad all of the other Sega consoles failed on their ass.

Technical superiority still does not equal better, especially when it dominated secondary markets.

You know, this is a "Greatest" console thread, not so much a "favorite" thread. My error. In that case I'll go firmly with the SNES. It had a lot of games, both good and bad, and it held the lion's share of the market for longer than any other console. Back in its heyday, you HAD to have a SNES. Although I don't feel the same way about some of these, it had some of the most popular games around, and even secondhand, buying them today is costly simply because of how well known and well-recognized they are. Final Fantasy IV and VI, Secret of Mana, Earthbound even, these are some of the best games in gaming history, and they;re still popular. Last time I saw a copy of any of these for sale it was well over $100. And people were buying them.

Because the SNES was back when people cared less about graphics in the games they made.

Still, my favourite is and always will be the Genesis, I think.

WHAT noo damn things would screw up half the time.. Blowing in the cartriges.. trying to make sure they game is inside Just right or you get the green screen..
And how the hell did it save the game industry.. Atari was the birth of game consols.. and NES just took off with the idea..

SNES is the best system.. i miss it soo.. but good thing for computers muaahhaha

Well I have a 20 year old Mario cartridge with parts of the plastic frame missing that works 100% fine, and the majority of carts around today still work. Additionally it's possible to still find functional Nintendo units and accessories. Furthermore the NES and most accessories were durable as all get out - compared to the failure rate of modern hardware, NES was like a stone titan.

Someone doesn't know their video game history. [IMG]

Shame on you, Neph. The CD was an addition to the Genesis that allowed it to play CDs vice cartriges. It was a fine idea that was horribly implemented.

If this thread is for the 'greatest' console ever, not your favorite, then I would go with the Sega CD addition to the Genesis.

Simply put: look at the impact it has made on the gaming industry. The industry as we see it today would not be this way without the Sega CD.

    Allow me to explain-

The NES was a fine system that brought the home gaming industry back from the edge of death. It stands as one of the greatest systems of all time, there's no arguing that. Shigeru Myamoto's Mario Brothers (which originally started as a Popeye game) set up the NES, and the video game industry, for years to come.

Sega, not to be outdone, released their Genesis system. Nintendo, hell-bent on retaining their market released the SNES thereafter. Many, many of us remember the rivalry between Nintendo and Sega for the market, and during this time many excellent games were produced on both sides of the line, along with many, many utterly horrible games as well.

Eventually the SNES began to get a leg up on the Genesis, so in response Sega decided to try tapping into the power of a new form of digital media to sell their games- The Compact Disk.

Thus the Sega CD was born.

At first Nintendo saw this and freaked. It caught them completely by surprise and almost immediately began to pour money into researching their own CD device for the SNES. However as time passed and the 'threat' of the Sega CD faded (horrible game after horrible game) Nintendo pulled the plug on their CD drive and went along with their sales same as before.

Who was the company who was designing the Nintendo's new CD drive?

    Sony.

After Nintendo pulled out leaving them hanging to dry Sony decided that perhaps it was time they tried to put their chips on the gaming industry table. God knows they had more than enough money to fund their experiment. Thus their research continued and the Sony Playstation was born.

It hit the market right around the same time as the Sega Saturn, the Neo Geo, and the Jaguar all arrived. Unlike the afore mentioned systems the Playstation managed to keep hold of its share of the video game industry eventually began to expand. Games such as Twisted Metal and Crash Bandicoot helped raise the system's popularity until finally the PlayStation became a household name.

The rest is history. Ever since then Nintendo has been fighting the market against Sony. When the X-Box came out Microsoft began to venture into this new area of console goodness. Thus these three companies changed and evolved, each trying to out do the other, constantly trying to get the edge on the others.

Not too long ago Nintendo had a monopoly on the handheld market, until Sony release their PSP. Not since the Game Gear has Nintendo been so pressed like this with regards to handhelds.

And look what it's done. Nintendo is finally going to have to evolve their Gameboy to compete with the PSP and finally bring it to the age of compact disks, leaving behind cartridges forever. Sony has been pressing Nintendo to evolve ever since its inception. Without the competition we may still be using cartridges in our gaming systems.

And all of this has been because of one really good idea with the worst implementation ever- the Sega CD. The greatest gaming system ever not for its games or its specifications, but for the impact it had on the gaming industry as a whole. The NES may have been the "Ford" company that brought videogames into the homes of millions unlike never before, but the Sega CD was the catalyst that helped evolve those old 'Model-Ts' into the Ferrari’s we utilize today, even if they didn't mean to.

Absolutely wrong. First off, the Nintendo DS is NOT a Gameboy. Do you see 'Gameboy' in its name anywhere? Cause I don't.

The line of Gameboys goes: Gameboy, Gameboy Pocket, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, Gameboy Advance SP, Gameboy Micro, Gameboy Advance SP II. The SP II was a remade version of the SP but with a backlit screen instead of what was used in the original. The original used some kind of side lights as far as I know.

Second, compact disks work well in home consoles, but are bad for handhelds. Handhelds have to use battery life. CD's have to spin. Spinning it takes energy, thereby reducing it's battery life.

Third, Nintendo doesn't have to do ANYTHING. When the PSP came the DS outsold it, and it's still outselling it. The Gameboy Advance is selling more than the PSP. This graph shows PSP sales vs. DS sales.

Edit: Also, if we were talking about our favorite console, I would say the SNES. It has all of the graphical abilities I want, a lot of great games, and a good controller, and very good durability. My SNES and all of it's games, accessories, and cleaning stuff still work perfectly.
