o.o Otaru's voice is messed up!!! It sounds too young and kiddish for him! Lime's voice was ok, I guess, sometimes a little squeaky for serious parts. You know, Echiko (my sis) have a feeling Lime and Otaru's voice actors are the same person.. Cherry's, I guess it's bearable. The rest of the casts are pretty good, I guess. Hanagata's voice is the one most worth praising! He actually sounds wacky! (ne, Aoi-chan?)

Seeing as this is my only SMJ DVD collection owned currently, (hurry up and ship Vol1 & 2 of J!! >_<) it's the only dub of J I've heard to date...and quite frankly, it's awful. Hell, it's pretty disgraceful...The Original Japanese Acting is superb, the Spanish ain't bad either...but the English..oooo....

Not to say there weren't some good players involved...the dub contains three tiers....the average tier (bland, okay voices, encompassing 40% of acting...nothing special but tolerable), the just plain awful tier (voice actors that should be shot :p, 40% more of the acting), and the Hall of famers (the damn good voicers that gave SMJ all it deserved...sadly a measly 20%)...

    Individual Cases That Stood Out

    Mamiya Otaru
Yuck, he was casted with one of the Digimon dubbed voicers! Sounds like the enthused voice of a cheap muppet or something...waay too light. *Shudder* I kept waiting for him to call out for "Lime-mon" or "Cherry-mon"...

    Lime
Let me state two points. Point one: Nobody does Megumi Hayashibara like Megumi Hayashibara. Point two: Nobody does Megumi Hayashibara like Megumi Hayashibara. This voice actor seemed to play out in sync with Otaru's actor. Too light for the part, even for Lime...This actress also played Sakuya in Tenchi in Tokyo.

    Bloodberry
This actress is great! She captured Bloodberry perfectly!

    Cherry
Mehh...good. The voice works for Cherry, but with a little better inflection, she'd be as good as Bloodberry.

    Faust
Another "not bad" one. Has the Faust monotone going...just needs a little bit of work.

    Tama/Baiko
These just didn't sound right...I don't know what else I can say.

    Yumeji
Well done, almost indistinguishable from the original.

    Hanagata
A good take on Hanako. Goofy, and not cliche-gay (lispy). He's lacking a little bit of seriousness in his tone though, as the original seems more focused around Otaru...

Hikaru - yep, it's the sequel of SMJ!

Yeah... who could've guessed that one of the best animes out there with some of the best Japanese dub voices have some of the WORST English dubs...

And isn't OCEAN GROUP supposed to be somewhat good at picking voices? Wait... is only SMJtoX's casts by OCEAN GROUP or are J and Jagain also?

    *still shuddering from Otaru's voice*

I can speak for J Again after viewing the credits...not a single "OCEAN GROUP" in there...I believe "Zero Limits Productions" were the ones to blame on this one. :D

    That's why I couldn't find them before...

Well here's their site. Looks like they did the original SMJ series too... but not J to X.

Edit: MY bad. They only did the subtitling...J was recorded by Ocean Studios like you said, Sachi. J Again was recorded by Animaze., Inc.

Hmm...Ocean Studios is here in Vancouver, Animaze is in LA...the distance alone would explain the difference in voice actors...

Actually, ppv_14, I believe Sachiko bought the dvds, but she's recording them onto tapes so those of her friends (including me) who don't have dvd players could watch it too. That right, Sachiko?

Not planning to buy 'em. I really didn't enjoy it as much as the original...and I only bought J Again since it was released in a single package. Too many dvds to consider getting j to x. o.o

The spanish dub is really good, and it's best performance is on J to X. I've never heard the english one. In the spanish one Lime changes her voice when she pretends to be sweeter (if that's was possible), Hanagata rocks, Cherry matches really ok with her teenager personality, and the most comic characters are Baiko and Tamasaburo , dunno why, but maybe it's because they're male characters in a feminine role (their names recalls kabuki actors, if someone doesn't know the story, and in kabuki women are played by men).
