I'm too lazy to research this, so I'll just ask.
I hear that the show Lupin the third is 30 years old which is no suprise by looking at it. Hey I love the show because it looks so 1970s. I supose the manga is just as old.
But watching an episode recently I heard a referance to Regis Philbin's Who Wants To Be a Millionaire, a show less then 3 years old.
And I know that Castle of Cogliostro is a little old, but how old?
How could something 30 years old have a referance to this show?

This is probably so, because the show was translated, dubbed, re-dubbed/translated (whichever, you get the idea) less than three years ago. This gives you a rough idea about the amount of warping an american company does when they convert the language into english.

    castle of cagliostro =1980.
but i don't know which lupin show you're refering to. Lupin is still going strong. another feature was released not all that long ago. there's been about 5 movies all up. I don't think there's been any recent tv series though.
i've been meaning to start a thread to ask this, but i'll just ask it here now.:D
has anyone seen any of the movies other than the castle of cagliostro?. if so i'd be interested to what you thought of them/it.

    Lupin III Movie Dates:
    Strange Psyco-kinetic Strategy (1974) - Live-action, not animated ^^
Mystery of Mamo (Lupin vs. the Clone) (1978)
    Castle of Cagliostro (1979)
Legend of the Gold of Babylon (1985)
    Voyage to Danger (1993)
    Dragon of Doom (1994)
The Pursuit of Harimao's Treasure (To Hell with Nostrodamus!) (1995)
Secret of the Twilight Gemini (Dead Or Alive) (1996)

    TV Series:
    Lupin III (1971)
    New Lupin III (1977)
    Lupin III Part 3 (1985)

To Sarah: You may, or may not have been an unwilling victim of "localization". For instance, japanese humor is unique and hard to translate while maintaining its feel.

Puns are a good example - words that sound the same in Japanese are very very different in the English equivalent. Other references are often based on Japanese Culture and Customs that the average gai-jin (foreigner) wouldn't pick up on, without lengthy explanation.

So, to make sense, english releases will often insert their own joke, sometimes using local culture to make up for it - the result you get is not a phrase-by-phrase translation, but rather an overall translation - something entirely different in context, but achieves the same result.

poom-poom: I saw Legend of the Gold of Babylon and Secret of the Twilight Gemini in addition to Castle of Cagliostro. If you enjoyed Castle, then it's a safe bet to say you'd enjoy them all - Lupin is one anime that never seems to disappoint me. :)

Thanks for clearing all that up. I was talking about the show they air on CN, which is the original. I didn't know there were 3 shows and that many movies.
Did the manga come out b4 or after the first show?

    An excellent resource is http://www.lupinencyclopedia.com/

Has just about everything Lupin you'd ever want to know. CN is apparantly airing the second season, I've been told. Don't have that channel, so I don't personally know for sure.

And Monkey Punch's Lupin III manga was the first realization of it all. The animated version would come later...

Actually the one CN shows is the second season. There are less sexual jokes, and Lupin's jacket is red instead of green. And the characters look a little different. Here's an example of Fujiko from the first season in '71:

Wait, by "season" you mean "show?" Like one show was made in 1971, another in 1985, ect? Because when seasons are seperated by that many years and the show generally becomes differant, that means it's a new show, not a secound season.
And why does CN only show one season? Why not the whole show?
Wait now I'm confusing myself. Maybe I'll just go to that site.

Castle of Cagliostro was my first introduction into the Lupin universe. I was interested in it, so a friend hooked me up with several of the other Lupin movies. I've seen:

    Legend of the Twilight Gemini
    Zantetzu (sp?) sword
    Liberty Crisis
    Tokyo Crisis
    Die Nostradamus
    Dead or Alive
The Pursuit of Harimao's Treasure (I think this was the title of the movie . . it opened with Goemon getting married and these ninja-type-bad-guys come in trying to steal some pot)

All of them were entertaining, though I found it odd that Twilight Gemini was one of the first Lupin movies to make it to the states, since it was one of my least favorites.

I guess I was kind of spoiled by the movies . . . I saw all of these before I saw the first TV series. The manga is also a lot more raunchy than the movies and the shows (I've only read the first volume released by tokyopop).

You're right. The show CN is showing was referred to in Japan as-"The New Lupin the Third".It aired in 1979,and the first show aired in 1971.I just called them seasons because it's a little easier to grasp. They didn't show the first season(I'm guessing) because it was really loaded with sex.Even Adult Swim has it's limits. If they did show it,only a fraction would make it to the air.

Nice guess, but it's off the mark. I haven't seen the CN stuff, but I have the first 1/4 of the first season. There's been one scene I would deem "inappropriate" for american televising, and it's one that easily could have been cut without trouble.

I think it's age and size were the deterrents among other factors that aren't plainly visible to us. The "New Lupin" was the first anime series to have stereo sound (there's some trivia for you buffs), and it ran 155 episodes versus the original Lupin's 24.

A shame to deny the stuff to viewers, though. The quality is none too less in the originals.
