Well, I'm going to go for the obvious one, Evangelion. If you haven't already seen it. It's very popular, and I personaly feel deservedly so. It can be kind of hard going to watch it though when you're already kind of depressed.
Escaflowne, if you count it as a mecha anime is very very very good(I reckon better than Eva). So watch it. Do.

Well how could I forget Evangelion, seen that. Escaflowne, ehh... I'll think about it (My experiance with that anime, not so good) I was also thinking about Robotech, but seeing as how I'm not too impressed with Macross, well...[

And most of the animes on that list are either on VHS or DVD (Mostly DVD), or I saw it on the action channel with *shudders * horrendous dubs.

I too was unfond of Escaflowne for the first few episodes, but by half way through, it had become one of my most favoured anime of all time. I've also heard terrible things of the dubbing/editing.

It aired in the US for a while and was edited severly. The commercial breaks were almost longer than the actual episode. On the DVDs though, it is uncut.(The dub isnt bad either)

I've not seen it myself, but Dai-Guard is supposedly a good show. A bit different, because it takes three to actually pilot Dai-Guard effectively. One for motor, one for systems, and one for data. Pretty cool, and it seems to have a Nadesico type flavor, where politics sometimes can be pretty important.

If you're into the oldies, the original Bubblegum Crisis is pretty cool. So is Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040, by the wayside.

RahXephon too, is a good one. I've only watched one episode at length, and I really enjoy it.

Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure is great stuff. I want to get this set, myself. It's funny, but at the same time, it can be pretty serious. Like, the baddies are hilarious, but there's also a lot driving some of them. Kind of a cross between Eva, Tenchi, and Nadesico (if you can actually cross Eva and Nadesico...^_^;) and a little Back to the Future...for those parallels you come into.

It's already been mentioned a few times, but Martian Successor Nadesico is a yummy one. Funny and full of parodies at first, but it gets pretty harried toward the end. And even just watching the movie makes it all worthwhile.

    Unimpressed with Macross???

How??? You've seen it, right? (just asking because some people I know judge a series by its animation level, and are dumb enough to compare a twenty year old anime with one only a few years old)

Anyway, I don't know if it's a list you'll like, but here are some good ones that you probably haven't seen.

    -Macross (the original series)
    -Macross: Do You Remember Love
    -Macross Plus
    -Macross Zero
    -Macross 2
    -Robotech (a nice long series)
    -Escaflowne
    -Evangelion
    -M.D. Geist
    -Armored Troopers Votoms
