I was watching SMJ for the ninth time to get ideas for my SMJ shrine (and the eventual episode guide),when I came across something in episode 8 that puzzled me.

Does anyone happen to know the significance of the eagle and eggplant that appeared over the Japoness Fuji in Hanagata's dream?

InuYasha - where this bit goes in the episode guide depends heavily on the answer...

By stroke of Luck, I've got it...!

(Wow, to think the dream is significant! I never thought of it as much anything but Hana's twisted head....:))

This is actually a reflection of Japanese superstition:

[An Excerpt from HELLO, the electronic newsletter published by the students of Tanaka Seminar at Tokuyama Women's College, Yamaguchi, Japan.]

*hatsuyume (a dream which a person has on the first or second night of January)

"Hatsuyume" means a dream which a person has on the first or second night of January. Speaking of what the Japanese say "ichi-Fuji, ni-taka, san-nasubi" (the best is Mt.Fuji, the second best is a hawk, and the third best is an eggplant), it is lucky if you see these things in your "hatsuyume". Suru ("Suruga" is an old name for Shizuoka Prefecture) is known for its associations with Ieyasu Tokugawa. It seems the three things are the special products of Suruga. Dreams of these are called the lucky dreams because you associate "Mt.Fuji" with something high and magnificent, "hawk" with grabbing at a chance, and "eggplant" with achievement or efficiency (because eggplants don't produce more blossoms than is necessary).

So, it basically falls in this episode with all the omens and signs suggesting that he will have a love connection with his neighbour Otaru....Poor guy....

BakaMattSu, and dontcha just love all the cultural tie-ins with History?

Which? Otaru, or Hanagata because he has delusional dreams?

That's pretty interesting stuff though. To think, right after discovering this magazine, it would have something so relevant to a random question asked here..

'Fortune's fool'? You mean fortune made a fool of him? Doesn't that indirectly mean delusional anyway? Don't get me wrong, I'd never take Hana out of the series, he adds too much humor.

It works both ways ;). That's why I left it open to interpretation...

BakaMattSu, but which one came to your mind first?

Yes, fortune did. Fortune was very mean by jerking his chain like that. Fortune should be given a time out for putting Hanagata in a "star crossed love" position.

Doesn't that indirectly mean delusional anyway?

Yes it does. And yes Hanagata is delusional. We never said he was sane, only that he was lovely ^_^.

That and he drives the monkey train. (I'm serious. It's in J to X)
