It's an OVA series of Saber Marionette. The first animated version, actually.

It takes place 200 years after Saber Marionette J, and in Romana.

The mysterious Star Face is after the throne, and prince Villey (Junior) is caught up in the mess. It features three marionettes who share their J counterparts' name and personality, but are not the same three Otaru had.

It mirrors some aspects of the SMJ setup, but it is a far darker chapter than its cousin.

Satoru Akahori wrote this story when he was asked if a small OVA could be done of his in-motion story, Saber Marionette J. The scope of his story was far too much to fit into the small series he was offered, so Akahori instead brought forth this tale.

Not as enjoyable as J, but still a decent watch. Supposedly released on DVD according to old Banda-Ent release schedules, but I have to yet to see it anywhere.

You may have a little trouble finding it, but you may luck out at chinatown.

R has only been released on video thus far. Bandai Entertainment had it posted on their DVD release schedule a few years back (slated before J to X, IIRC), but it mysteriously vanished from that list, and I have not heard hide nor hair of it since.

    Good luck in your search!

Thank you BMS. SMR was an interesting watch, and I knew where it fit into the timeline, but I had always wondered why it was made.

I am certainly glad he didn't try to stuff SMJ into 3 eps, and that he was later able to make it into a full size series.

Did he get the chance to make SMJ into an anime because SMR had been a success? If so, I would appreciate it much more than I do now :)

I doubt this will do you any good, but it was a little store called "Entertainment Tonight". As I said, it's just a little local shop in my home town, so unless by some fluke you're in the Strathroy area, you're sadly out of luck there.

Interesting inquiry. Interested in knowing that, myself, now.

My judgement says that there isn't a direct relation between how SMR was received in anime form and the production of SMJ. That's loosely based on the fact that both the sequel (SMR2) and alternate type side-story (SMZ) did not make it into animated form, and had SMR been a great success, I would imagine they would have.

Reading this thread by itself, me and Mamiya have. I know a number of our other members have as well. I have some ratty fansubs of it. :p
