hey, i just got a copy on newtype usa april issue. i can't say i was expecting much from theSaiyuki screener. I've seen some dodgy efforts, but this one takes the cake. i went thru a couple of phases when i saw this.
a)- dissapointed. (how?, i had no expectations)
b)- histericks at the corny lines and action scenes.
    c) amazed.
i don't think i've seen anyone cut so many corners in anime. They drew as little as possible and tried to hide it with annoying framing and freeze frame action. The few parts that were supposed to be fluid were so jerky that they could induce a seizure.
all credit to the music, which went out of its way to fit in with the rest of the show.
I would have preffered the dvd to have an episode of pokemon on it. At least then i'd know NTUSA wasn't trying. This is ment to be a BONUS disc ya hear me BONUSSSSSS!!!. i never thought i could be dissapointed in a 'bonus' until now...

has anyone else seen anything from this anime?

I've seen the entire series and read all but the most recent volume of Saiyuki RELOAD. It is one of my favorite series. *points to avatar*

The first episode is not exactly the best example of this series. It's a first episode, things like this happen. A lot of Saiyuki is well-animated, actually. It's just that there are parts where the animators got lazy. The rest of my friends and I find this rather amusing, and, well....we're basically female versions of the four main guys and Kougaiji.

Your other problem is that you were watching the dub which is horrid. Somebody needs to shoot Stephen Foster, or at least ban him from ever writing his own scripts again. The characters personalities were switched around, twisted, and mangled beyond all recognition. The Japanese is so much better. Heck, the Chinese fansubs are better and truer to the anime than the American dub.

The story does get better, I promise. Just do yourself a favor and never ever watch the dub again. Although I did hear that ADV got a new script writer for the dub. Hopefully he or she will do a better job in portraying the characters the way they were intended to be portrayed.

I hate to say it, Poom Poom, but you made a mistake here. You judged the whole series off of the first episode alone, and the dub of it no less. If I had judged half of the anime I've watched from just the first episode, I wouldn't have ended up watching as many wonderful and interesting series as I have. Saiyuki is no exception. What you need to do is rent or borrow the first dvd, or download the fansubs and watch more than just one, and base your opinions off of them.

And if it matters to you, dub notwithstanding, the Japanese-language version of the first episode is rather true to the manga, plotwise at least. It's the "hey, let's introduce everyone and get them together for a journey" episode. It gets better.

bought the first dvd, never watched the newtype dvd(meant to, but i'm kinda lazy atm lol). i wanted it for the simple reason that i've been amused by it ever since newtype(japan) had the image of him in the blood with his gun to his head. i just thought it looked funny from that. *^-^*

the dub...gods...let's not talk about that crock of sh**...please...
japanese is pretty good. they really abuse cell count saving..hehe
but, i'm gonna get the rest...i pray it gets better. considering it's a very popular legend.

Well, it certainly is a very interesting take on the legend. But then it's Minekura Kazuya. Her stuff is like that. Don't expect it to be exactly like the legend. But do expect it to be closer than Dragonball was. ^_^

I've seen the first five epsoides and they seemed all right to me. As for sub vs dub as usaly the sub stays closer to the orignal anime. I'd say give the anime another chance it seems to be going well enough so far it could be better I admit but as with so many anime that come from manga don't expct to much in the way of accuracy. As for the animaton it ok at times but I really don't care that much for CG mixed with hand cells. Over all I think it's worth taking a deeper look into.

Kazuya Minekura's art style takes some getting used to, and I thought it was a bit strange at first. But now I really like it, and I think her characters are incredibly attractive.

The anime actually stays pretty close to the manga. Well, until the second half, then it's a filler story. It's a good filler story, but the manga is much much better. Sadly, some of the really good manga bits never got into the anime (like Gojyo kissing the chick who was attacking him....)

Zero, don't you mean 1 being the worst and 10 being the best? That's generally how it goes, anyway....

I didn't think it was that bad. A bit cheesy at times yes but as with most superhero shows there is going to be a ceritan amount of cheeyness to it be it a ai little or a lot. I think Saiyuk is one of thoses shows that grows on you. As for me I stick to manga like glue cause they are so much better than the anime most of the time.
