You may never see me in this forum again, so try and enjoy it.
Question: in what sort of time period is Naruto set? Based on the bits I've read, it's hard to tell.

Well considering that its never been stated that its our own Earth, it could very well be any time period, even present day but that wouldnt even matter. It's not the point. We could create some parallel.. perhaps in a few hundreds years they may have skyscrapers and guns and such.. but then we would have a totally different feel to this world. maybe in the future we will get a Naruto 2049 or something. probably not. Naruto's surgery is pretty advanced I would say.. so its not a very undevelopped world.. but then again it could be their dark ages. Well on with guessing but it's not going to keep me up tonight thinking about it.

If you notice...there's normal toiletries. Also, a very large asphalt/concrete bridge (which happens to be named after Naruto). You don't see lighting, but you can probably deduce that it's flourescents because it isn't a dim lighting environment. You also have single-breasted suits...outfits that suit modern military standards (especially the Jounin)...etc.

Likewise, there are still small villages. There are no cars. They still use unpowered boats.

I'd say it's an amalgamation of both samurai-age japan and modern. More to the rustic end though. I believe the moderness of it is just there for it to be "easy".

I'd agree with Izzy. I think the author wanted to create a unique world for Naruto where people live in the age of ninja's and tribes.

also, they have surveilance and tvs and stuff, Anko watches that tape of gaara remember?

Actually if i remember right, when they went to the country of the wave, they chose to conceal themselves by NOT turning on the boats motor.

just checked it, and yea episode 7 right at the start, they had an outboard motor
