Am I the only one who hates the Shichinintai? Not just the characters, but the entire story thread. I mean, what's the big deal, they're just humans with shikon shards? InuYasha and the troop have had to deal with much worse than that.

I've had to convince myself that they not only have shards, but their weapons do too. Otherwise, why doesn't tessaiga cut the jakotsutou into pieces? It is the steel cleaving fang afterall ;).

And what's the deal with Renkotsu? He's practically a mecha for God's sake! It's supposed to be sengokujidai; he's totally out of place.

And Bankotsu is a video game character. The Banryuu's a ridiculously heavy weapon. Reminds me of the fight scene from Crouching Tiger where Michelle Yeoh fights Zhang Ziyi for the second time and she picks up a halberd-like weapon and nearly falls backwards because it's so heavy. It's impractical in a real fight. Of course, if it were a magic sword or wielded by a youkai, that would be a different story ;).

Oh well, all this complaining makes me feel like Seinfeld, but I'm starting to think tha InuYasha is getting too long in the tooth if this storyline had to be scraped off the bottom of the barrel. Maybe I'm wrong and the kiddies in Japan really loved it, but I *hate* it.

For starters, this storyline is actually in the manga so it's entirely completely canon.

To address your complaints one paragraph at a time....

First, they're not just humans with shikon shards. They're a band of seven highly feared mercenaries who were once defeated, killed, and buried, but Naraku revived them with shikon shards. Now apparently, they weren't defeated easily, which explains why they're still so tough now.

Second, their weapons were very tough, and highly specialized to make them dangerous and allow the mercenaries to be effective with fewer numbers. That, and Tessaiga isn't supposed to be able to cleave swords. Its specialties seem to be fighting youkai to protect humans. Several swords and even some non-swords (Sesshy's dragon arm, Toukajin's stomach, Ryukotsusei's body) are able to block the sword effectively. So it makes sense that Jakotsu's special snake-sword can block it too, especially considering that Jakotsu actually wraps the snake-sword around Tessaiga to stop it.

Third, you probably mean Ginkotsu, not Renkotsu. Renkotsu uses pyrotechnics. As for Ginkotsu, he's rather steam-powered, and probably uses some form of magic as well. Either way, just ignore it. He's a primitive mecha, and he was created by Takahashi-sempai after all.

Fourth, the deal with Bankotsu's sword is similar to Inuyasha's Tessaiga and Sango's Hiraikotsu. Bankotsu most likely trained really really hard to be able to lift a weight like the Banryuu with one hand, the same way Sango trained really really hard to be able to swing and throw Hiraikotsu with only one hand. The first movie even shows Miroku nearly falling over under Hiraikotsu's weight at one point when he goes to lift it.

Lastly, the story wasn't scraped off of the bottom of the barrel. As I already mentioned, it actually exists in the manga, and was thus created by Takahashi-sempai. I personally like how it's working out so far and feel that it fits just fine, especially after that nice long stretch of filler material we just had.

But you're still perfectly welcome to hate the Shichinin-tai, of course.

RUMIKO TAKASHI, it's hard for me to hate this villan! LOL! :anime: He's a cutie!
Since this is a thread about the Shichinin-tai,

i most certainly agree with you kikyouchibi.Saburo, inuyashas a half breed with no training and he can weild tetsuaiga, and bankotsus a fully trained killer, so he should have around the same strengh as inuyasha.

But then we wouldn't have anything to watch or discuss on this forum, unless Rumiko planned some Shinichinitai (can't spell, sorry) sequel, which is doubtful since we all know how much Rumiko relishes in her romantic plots, which she can't get too many of out of the Shichinitai.
