Hello all, I am just a lowly SMJ fan with some questions about the manga. First of all (and this is rather a lame question) what is the difference between the novels and the manga? I don't mean story-wise, and I know that the novels were written first, but why are they referred to as novels? Are they graphic novels, like we traditionally think of them (mostly manga with speech bubbles)? Or mostly just written out, with a few illustrations? And does anyone actually have them? I was thinking about getting them, but I can't find them for sale anywhere online. I was also considering getting the manga. I have heard some pretty good things about it as well, and I really liked SMJ (I think SMJ Again is my favorite). Is it similar in style to that? If I did get the manga, or the novels, I have a scanner, and I noticed that some people were trying to work on a translation project for the manga. I would be happy to assist by scanning all of them in if needed. Well, I would appreciate any help you can give me.

    Welcome to the boards, Fausto-sama!

I can't really speak for the novels, as I can't find them either, but I do own the manga. The story line (from what I can tell by looking at the pretty pictures *LOL*) is .... roughly the same as J, but much more ecchi. The character designs are a bit simpler, too, and Hanagata appears much less frequently (I want my money back!)

Ohhh, hear that guys? We have a vict-- I mean volunteer for the translation project!!! I have all the manga currently, Faust, but we always need translation help, and scanning help if you have the manga is appreciated too. It seems that my scanner is acting up a bit these days and making jpgs that no one else (read: InuYasha :p) can view.

Thanks for your offer and welcome aboard!

    ~ Aoi

Whoa! Aoi, you left your posts at 666 last night!

Okay Faust, think novels as in the more traditional sense...lots of words, with a few illustrations here and there... These came first, and therefore the story is the same. As for finding them, that may be very hard to do- though I will keep an eye out if you so wish?

The Manga came after the series and also follows the same storyline. It's apparently a little more widespread, and you should be able to obtain a copy from most online retailers that deal in manga stock.

Of course, take into account that things are always changed to be orginal, so while the main plot remains unchanged, there are differences all around.

This won't stop desperate fans in their quest for more Saber Marionette material though, and if- I mean when- we get the translation project underway, we promise to make it worth any fan's while...

BakaMattSu, if Inu thought the jpegs he got were scary, he should see the original bitmaps that came off the scanner before I cleaned them up a bit! :D

Cool, thanks for clearing that up. I think I will order the manga soon (I have no problem with it being ecchi... hehe). If you could keep a lookout for the novels, that would be great, I have the ISBNs, and I too will look for them. Incidentally, does anyone have the SMJ Parody Special Manga? I will probably try and get that too if I can. MY scanner is pretty good, I will let you guys know when I get the manga, and provide any help I can on the translation project.

    Baka's on call!

Anyone got a clue what the books featured on the site are? The cover shown for volume 1 doesn't match anything I've seen for the novels or manga...any guesses?

Hmmm... My guess is that it is an episode guide to the TV series... I think I heard somewhere that there were a few floating around. I'm not sure though, that's just a guess.

    The search continues...

Well, you have mentioned you have the ISBNs, etc..

So, I guess you could speical order it from somewhere... maybe Sasuga Books, where Aoi picked up her Manga I believe?

    well....worth a shot anyway.

Yeah, that's why i got ISBNs. Hopefully Sasuga will be able to find them. However, I will probably try and get the manga first (since my ability to read japanese is fairly poor, but my ability to look at pretty pictures is top-notch!). I have the ISBN for the Parody Special! manga as well, so I'll see if I can order that from them too. If I get the Dragon Magazine artbook as well, I'll put some scans of that up for the people who don't have it. I'm a big fan of Akahori's character ideas, and he usually picks good artists to design and illustrate them.

Welcome Faust, to this wonderful M2A board of Saber Marionette!

I've been wondering the same question myself of the difference between the manga and the novels. Thanks for informing us all, BakaMattSu and Lady Aoi! ^o^ They seemed practically the same. So, is the manga better or the novel of SMJ?

Ooo! Faust, you might scan some out from the artbook?!! Wanna see! Hopefully you'll get them soon. I'm dying to see them, and besides, if the artworks are nice, I might/might not consider of buying the artbook. Who knows? For those of you who owns the artbook(s), are they worth buying?

Matt? The first link you posted is a link to the film comic. That's why the cover looks different. It's just screen shots from the series with the word baloons.

~ Lady Aoi: were my scans that bad? they looked fine to me and I haven't had trouble with the scanner before.

Re: Film Book - Good to know...file that in my useless vault of knowledge (i.e. my brain)

Re: Novels - I would like to add that the orginal story covers all thru to the end of J to X as well...differences continue, of course.

Re: Scans - Not really as bad as I might have made them sound. I just meant that I had grayscaled them (to get rid of the yellowy paper color) and did a little rotation number or two on them, and seperated each page...remember, some had been scanned upside-down or crooked...but I had no problem with them - now if only all those squiggly lines in those balloons made some sense to me...I could always make up my own dialogue?

Alright I ordered the manga from Sasuga Books. I also emailed them asking if they can order the Parody Special one as well... hopefully I'll get that as well. I will probably order the artbook for SMJ from Animenation along with a couple of other ones (like Sorcerer Hunters). Well, I hope I get them soon!

Fausto-sama, let me know if you are sucessful in obtaining the parody special. I would like to own this as well.

^_^ Also, I have the SMJ filmbooks and the SMJ to X filmbook (not to be confused with the film comic). They're pretty straight forward, but at least they have character sketches.

When I get home in June, I'll be more than happy to scan any of the character pics/art book illustrations (when I get the art book) for anyone on this board who would like them.
