Ciel and I were wondering about it.
When a ninja strikes symbol of his village by scarring the forehead protector, what does it signify? For instance Look at Itachi and the (Shark Dude, please post his name here) head protectors symbols are striked through. Does that mean they are run away shinobi? But Zabuza(sp) is a run away shinobi but does didn't carve a line through his forehead protector.

What are you opinions in this matter?

lol Shark dude. :p Fish head white skinned water dude. a.k.a. Hoshigaki Kisame. Okay, so I decided to re-watch episode 81.. 'Shark dude' and Itachi are S-rank villains in the 'bingo book' This might have made sense since they were the only ones I saw with scratch marks on their head protectors.. and the only members so far of Akatsuki but..
I'm confused as to the significance for Sasuke. Anyways he didn't take his head protector with him..let's see if 'venus fly-trap dude' even has village symbol for us to look at
I'll just think for now it has various meanings.. but all a negative connotation towards their village of origin.

maybe it's just something that means that the person or thing that was fighting them disliked their village or something...

It's a sign of being a Missing-Nin (IE someone who no longer has any real ties to their village), I always thought. I don't quite remember Zabuza's story, however, but everyone else who has had it has that mark (Well.. Itachi, Sasuke, and Kisame. Can't rightly think of anyone else at this point). Though I'm not sure...

[EDIT] Though we could always consider the possibility that Zabuza WAS in the earlier part of the series, and the slash through the protector didn't appear, as far as I can recall, until Itachi and Kisame. It could very-well just be something that the creator decided to do as he went along, after the Zabuza sequence. [/EDIT]

well i heard the same as a previous poster here - that it was the sign of a missing-nin - but then we were talking about the idea and came to the conclusion that the only people who could get away with making that info known are those who do not care if they are spotted.

itachi is very strong so he has no worries - if people try to take him down well its not going to happen is it normal anbu cant do it

zabuza was strong but a handful of anbu could have taken him down with ease, hence it is too dangerous fo rhim to go public so to speak.

also i know that the main examples of missing-nin who do this sort of thing are members of whatsitcalled - the group that itatchi is part of - is it just thier symbol after all?
