Inu-Yasha What's in a name?

    Oni is most often translated to "Ogre" (it's the name I gave my computer), but I guess it's also used occasionally for "monster" or "demon." "Youkai" is the word they usually use for demons, though Asian youkai tend to be more like the Fae in the British Isles used to be (not the cleaned-up fairies that Disney hawks) than Western demons, in that they're magical, not always antagonistic, and have special powers. The best translation of "youkai" is "supernatural being," I've noticed.

    "Mononoke" is similar, and is used often for "demon" or "angry/vengeful spirit" or "monster." You hear the centipede lady in the first episode referred to as a mononoke, as is Urasue (I think).
