no.. it takes palce on a planet called 'Terra Two' basically 7 people came from Terra one to colonize terra 2, but the female was taken prisoner by the ship that brought them there. The 6 other people were all male. The 6 then used cloning technology to make more people, and separated to form their own countries.
Female dolls were made to replace females because they had no means to clone them. the marionettes were a shadow of Lorelei, the female that was held prisoner by the ship so many hundred years ago.
Faust and Ieyasu, 2 of the original first colonizers, made maiden circuits or hearts, to fit into marionettes. maiden circuits come in sets of 3 to form a 'perfect' Lorelei.
Faust's set were for Panter, Lynx, and Tiger, while Ieyasu's set is Lime Cherry and Bloodberry.
the circuits inside these marionettes, make them act like normal humans, that Love.

the six original colonizers have perfect clones made out of them (meaning they have original memories of way back when)

Faust's marionette's were already awake and working for and loving him.

but Ieyasu's marionettes were not awake yet. they were waiting for the perfect someone. = Otaru.

SMJ begins with Otaru finding Lime, then continues from there.

 

Saber Marionette J is one of those rare Animes that just seem to have it all. Exciting from the get go, it starts off outrageously funny, but before you know it, it becomes a very serious and oft times heartwarming experience.

As Seraphim filled in (with some unintentional spoilers ), SMJ focuses around a planet Terra II where a colonization disaster left six men stranded. Left with cloning as their sole means of reproduction, they were unable to create a female clone. In "memory of human females", they created robotic females, or as they are more oft referred to as marionettes.

The four series, "J", "J Again", "J to X", and "R" all take place at different time periods, but against this same backdrop...In order of actual timeline, they go in the above order I gave.
